What is a red flag in therapy?
A red flag in physical therapy is a sign or symptom that may indicate a serious medical condition requiring further evaluation. Examples include unexplained weight loss, worsening pain at rest, night pain that does not change with movement, progressive numbness or weakness, fever, or loss of bowel or bladder control. Physical therapists are trained to screen for red flags and refer patients when needed. While mild soreness can be normal, red flags require prompt attention to ensure safety and appropriate care.
